Economics 101 : Don’t Open A Starbucks Right Across The Street From Another Starbucks

Date July 1, 2008

Starbucks today announced that they plan on closing 600 “underperforming” stores.

I’m no rocket scientist but you would think that if you had a Starbucks on one corner of the street that you pretty much have that block covered.

Does it really make sense to open another Starbucks right across the street? That’s exactly what happened in the picture above. Some genius at Starbucks corporate headquarters figured that people who were on that side of the street must be too lazy to walk their fat asses over to the other side so they put up two Starbucks within throwing distance of each other.

They figured out that in this economy people don’t have the extra money to spend on overpriced coffee.

I’ll throw down a $4.00 white chocolate mocha but only when I am traveling with work - I expense that shit as breakfast.
